In Memorium Giving

How do you honour a remarkable person who has touched your life? A donation to the Alzheimer Society of York Region in memory or in honour of someone special pays a lasting tribute to those cherished and respected. Contact us and we will send you an “In Memoriam” card free of charge. We will let the family of the deceased, or the honouree know of your kind generosity, on your behalf. The amount of the gift is kept strictly confidential.

Create a Timeless Memorial in memory of a loved one. Join together with family, friends and others to establish a Memorial Fund that can be named for that special person. Friends and family can fundraise for the Alzheimer Society of York Region in whatever way is appropriate for you. Memorial Funds can be established in any amount and funds can continue to be donated to the Memorial Fund indefinitely. Please contact us for more details.


Monthly Giving

A simple and affordable donation option is through our monthly giving program. By choosing this option, you can support the Alzheimer Society of York Region through regular monthly donations. In this way, you can maximize your support while more easily managing your finances. Please contact us to sign up once and we will take care of the rest. You can cancel or change your support at any time.


Estate Giving

Leave a lasting gift to the Alzheimer Society of York Region by leaving a gift in your Will. Your gift can be a Specific Bequest where you designate a specific dollar amount or a piece of property such as real estate or securities. Alternately, it can be a Residual Bequest where you donate all or a portion of your estate to the Alzheimer Society of York Region after all your debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been paid. To make a gift in your Will, simply ask your lawyer to add a codicil to you existing Will. A codicil is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to plan your future gift. Other Ways to Give

It may be more advantageous for you to give a gift other than cash. It is important to consider your overall estate and financial plan when contemplating a gift and we encourage you to consult with your professional advisors. Other ways to give include gifts of stocks, bonds and mutual funds, life insurance, RRSPs and RRIFs and charitable trusts.


Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities (stocks, bonds and mutual funds etc.)

If you own highly appreciated securities you can benefit from preferential capital gains tax treatment by gifting the securities directly to the Alzheimer Society of York Region instead of selling them and then giving the cash. There is no capital gains tax to pay on gifts of securities and you will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full value of the gift.

HOW TO DO IT

Call or email us and let us know the following:
• Your full name
• The name of the securities and the number of shares
• The name and firm of your investment advisor

We will provide you with the information your financial advisor will require in order to transfer the securities.

For gifts in the form of share certificates, please contact us.

You will receive a tax receipt based on the value of the shares as of the market close on the day that the securities are received into our brokerage account.


Life Insurance

When you give a gift of life insurance, you can turn a relatively small gift today into an ultimately much larger gift in the future.

There are many ways to give a gift through life insurance, you can simply make the Alzheimer Society of York Region the beneficiary of your policy or you can give ownership of a new or existing policy to the Alzheimer Society of York Region. Different giving options have different tax consequences. Talk to your insurance professional or call us for assistance.

RRSPs and RRIFs

You can simply designate the Alzheimer Society of York Region on the beneficiary selection form of your RRSP or RRIF (depending on the financial institution) or you can make a gift in your Will that equals the proceeds of your retirement plan. Your estate will receive a charitable tax credit which can, depending on the circumstances, reduce or eliminate all taxes owed by your estate.

Charitable Trusts

Charitable Remainder Trusts – By making a gift through a trust during your lifetime, you can enjoy guaranteed income for life and a charitable tax receipt to reduce the income tax you pay. Upon your death, the Alzheimer Society of York Region will receive the remaining assets in the trust.


Testamentary Trusts – A trust can be created in your Will that provides for a loved one throughout their lifetime and when they pass away, the remaining assets pass to the Alzheimer Society of York Region.
